This Blog Lives On

Thats right, this blog might have hope. I decided to not return to Disney Cruise Line, but i did have a few people email me who like the idea of taking my place. I hope a year from now i can try working in the parks for a summer through a school program, but that would not be for a good long while. If anybody would like to contribute to this blog feel free to email me and I'm more than happy to help set you up. For those that would like to keep reading my posts, you can do so through my old blog found at www.jeremymilne.com.

Blog Theme Changed for the Time Being

Due to circumstances out of my control I won’t be able to post personal posts on this site for a good while. In the mean time, others have volunteered to share their day to day lives and adventure with Disney. If you would like to join this group of people contributing, please feel free to send an entry through my contact page.

Yahhh Barfy!

So much to update! Here we go…

A few days ago we had my first rocky seas, yahhhhh!!! The ship kept at full speed to reach Florida even with the 20 foot waves. I sat in the crew bar watching them move up and down while nursing a Corona (which if done in excess is almost as good as friends). I ended up feeling bit barfy (is that a word?) and went back to my room early.

Today I was able to get off the ship for a few hours when we hit Cozumel, Mexico. This little coastal city has a lot going for it other than it being in Mexico. I found the Mexican equivalent of a Wal-Mart to get shampoo and some masking tape but was disappointed to find they only sold movies in Spanish.

In Cozumel I did a horrid thing, something unforgivable, something that will haunt me for days, maybe even weeks, I... went to McDonalds. I could not hold back, the double quarter-pounder beckoned to me. The place was water front with a view that was amazing, go figure.

It's hard, there is a large group of entertainers who are coming to a contract end, I’m going to miss a lot of them, they have been so nice to me. They seem to be the spice of life for my day. The new group of entertainers coming in seems equally filled with this liquid insanity (some of that is found in the crew bar as well).

Two more days until we hit Castaway Key again, I can’t wait to hit the beach. I’ve discovered that the best part of my job is how flexible my schedule it.

Makes Me Feel like a Pirate

St. Thomas is this seedy little store port in the Virgin Islands where every second shop carries jewelry. I found my way through most of the stores before I ran into Edson who was phoning family and friends while in port.

It was both a relief and disconcerting to see the amount of security around the shopping zones; all the high gates with security booths on either side of them. I think of all our stops, this is one I’m impressed with the least, but it does have its charm and views.

Pumpkin Day!

WHAT A NIGHT!! I’ve been to some parties with huge budgets that did not even come close to last night. There is something to say for having entertainers run a party. They gave it this amazing “Rocky Horror Picture Show” theme.

I ended up going as a kid who escaped from the deck five children’s zone wearing footed Pajamas. Some of the youth counselors were kind enough to register me in the kids system for a short period so they could print me off one of the registration bracelets and the name tags that all the kids wear. For a ship with such limited resources, there were costumes of all levels. Never underestimate Disney Nuts on their one night to dress up like crazy people.

Afterwards having found a “happy place” with a few bottles of Corona, I made my way back to my room with the help of a friend. I think I’m finally starting to take enjoyment in daily life on the ship.

Thanks a ton Sal and all the other entertainers who worked their butt off to get this party up and running. Your guys all did great job.

Island Bound

Finally pictures! Yesterday on my way to the crew beach on castaway key, I was able to get a few snap shots of the floating juggernaut that I live on. And yes, it is as big as it looks. Along side it was the infamous “Flying Dutchman” from the movie “Pirates of the Caribbean 2”. I don’t suppose they are using it for the new movie as that it has been parked there for quite some time, though I might be wrong. The crew beach that Disney provides us is not too shabby, it has a barbecue running much of the day, plenty of hammocks and beach chairs, a volleyball beach and everything else a person could need. I caught sight of my first sting ray while combing the shore line in search of unique shells. I’ve been told there are all kinds of odd life in the waters that surround, I might see if I can get somebody to snorkel with me next time.

It feels weird coming into winter sweating to death on a beach. Last night I finally got tired of the night after night parties. It’s like being at university again; long days and late nights. After a single drink with Liz, I went back to my cabin and went to bed.

Today was not the best days. To be honest; I think the lack of communication with friends back home is starting to get to me. Don’t get me wrong, my friends on the ship are great, but there is a closeness that can only be achieved over years. I miss George, Thump and Orwin. Work continues to push me with what would in most cases should be divided up among 3 people. I think I can handle it, but the question is how long before is wears me out.

Getting Use to This Floating Theme Park

The whole thing seems a lot like a dream. Don’t get me wrong, by no means is it 100% what I wanted; but something feels fake about it all. Almost like it’s a movie and I’m waiting for the fade to dark.

To start, my work itself is a British comedy, I’m one of the few without a British accent (for now). My Welsh boss, the typical straight man found in every comedy routine, resembles a well muscled and thicker limbed Gandhi. I have trouble reading him; but he’s an easy man to respect. I do admit I feel a bit intimidated, he likes to make jokes about how I need to work out; I think I prefer my 13 year old Japanese school girl arms.

My co-workers are some of the oddest misfits you’ll ever lay your eyes on, but each of them has likable qualities. There is a camaraderie among most of them. This is something I did not expect here at Disney, but was delighted when I found it. There are number of actors on board I’ve taken a liking to as well, they show a genuine side and concern for those around them that defies the stereotype.

I was able to get off to see Castaway Cay, an island leased by Disney with a 100 year contract from the Bahamas. The beach was as nice as the pictures. The water was a clear turquoise, and every plant was organized on a level that only Disney could achieve. In the harbor sat the prop pirate ship from “Pirates of the Caribbean 2”. I'll try to get pictures of it next time were in port.

Ashley and Liz joined me for the tour ending with our own crew beach. Once again, Disney did a great Job giving us space. I even saw my first living hermit crab who proceeded to try to pinch when I went to remove him from the common walking path.

Now comes the time when I answer a few email questions I have received thought this blog.

Linda Asks...

Question: Is it true that the rooms for crew are so small that you have to fold up your bed to get changed?

Answer: No, though the rooms are not huge palaces of luxury, they are big enough to have a bathroom, desk, bed or beds (depending if you have a roommate), private closet with drawers, private safes, and as you go up in the ranks, they do get bigger. They provide most people with their own little LCD TV that has a few news channels and tons of ship board channels with movies and ship activities broadcasted.

Tim Asks…

Question: Do you ever get sea sick?

Answer: Never once, this is by no mean a small ship, in fact it feels for like a city. At times, I do forget were floating at sea.

Erin Asks…

Question: What’s it like working along side Mickey Mouse?

Answer: He’s pretty charming when you see him, I’m lucky enough to work in a department where he spends a lot of time.

Feel free to email using the post card in the upper right hand corner.

Cheers All,
Jeremy
